2009 International Rally

June 29- July 3, 2009

Hamburg, NY

Many signs of evidence such as arrowheads left by the Kahquak Indians and the Erie Indians have been found along the Eighteen Mile Creek and around the Erie County Fairgrounds. The name of "Lake Erie" and "Erie County" is derived from the Erie Indians.
The Town of Hamburg is internationally famous for its Devonian fossils and shale outcroppings along the bank of the Eighteen Mile Creek. The Kleis site, located across from the Erie County Fair Grounds, is on the National Register for historic places.

Presidents Message

OK, so I’m not very political, but I would be remiss as president of Gold Country Travelers if I did not remind all of you – YES – every last one of you to vote during the upcoming Presidential election.  I will not take side for either Mr. McCain or Mr. Obama, but I think that this election is the most important Presidential election in our lives.  With all that can happen in the next four or even eight years, who leads our great nation, is very, very important.  If you have children or grandchildren, our next leader will affect many, many aspects of their lives.  So again, without being too dramatic, vote on November 4 or vote via absentee ballot.

Also, remember that this the time of year that our club entertains nominations for new officers.  If you are so inclined and have questions, ask me or any other officer.

See you at an upcoming outing or at the Christmas dinner,

Dave Lee

JULY OUTING, BODEGA BAY

Scott and Christy Nyland, Wagonmasters

The July outing was held at Bodega Bay RV Park from July 3rd to July 6. All eleven rigs had arrived by mid morning of July 4th. Included in the group were Doc and Sandy (friends of Jim and Judy McGrew) who brought their camper.  We were treated to a wonderful combination of fog and sun all weekend. Friday was spent visiting playing golf and, taking short trips around the area.  Friday night dinner was held at the restaurant in front of the park. Not only could we walk there but also the service and food were great. After dinner people had a choice of a campfire or a game of 31 at the clubhouse.  Judy Hitt was our big 31 winner for the night.

Saturday morning found several of us walking up Bay Hill Rd. with John and Karen.  What a great view!  The goats looked extremely tiny on the hills. Later in the day Howard and Judy Hitt brought back a treasure--- an autographed picture of Tippi Hedren.  She had been signing autographs at The Tides   for fans of "The Birds" They actually got to talk with her.  Saturday night we all gathered for  "Attitude Adjustment Hour" and dinner. We had lasagna, wonderful salads, breads and appetizers. For dessert we had birthday cake to celebrate Betty's birthday. After dinner the 31 players and campfire people enjoyed their respective activities. Judy Hitt was again the winner for 31.  She must have caught the virus from Scott.  On the way back to our rigs we saw fireworks in the fog coming from the Bay; Very pretty.   Sunday morning we met for a quick meeting.  Several rigs needed to leave but the majority stayed.  In the afternoon we had some excitement in that a small fire started up the hill from the campground. Both fire trucks and air tankers were there and put out the fire quickly Thanks to everyone we had a great dinner of leftovers Sunday night. Because of the fire danger we didn't have a fire. Everyone left for home on Monday morning.  Thanks to all for your help and contributions such as firewood. All of the help truly makes these trips total club outings.

Dillon Beach  August 20 – 24, 2008

Wagon masters – Dave and Marsha Lee

Wagon masters Dave and Marsha Lee arrived at Dillon’s Beach on Wednesday, August 20.  After securing our “circle”, we visited with the club next to us.  We had met them before as former Gold Country Traveler’s Bob and Sue Miller are members.  The first of 5 couples arriving on Thursday arrived around noon and the remaining campers arrived throughout the day.  Scott Nyland helped Dick LaVergne, Aaron Harris and Dave Lee fly their kites.  Dick overcame the challenges of putting together his skateboard kite with little Davey the skateboarder and after fine-tuning the assembly, got the kite in the sky.  It entertained us all.  For dinner, some went out and the rest of brought our own food and ate as a group.  After dinner we enjoyed great fellowship around the fire.  The weather was nice which allowed us to enjoy the outdoors.

Friday was another great day and we welcomed another rig.  During the day some relaxed and others went into some of the surrounding towns.  Most of us did the big walk and part of the group (Carmen and Aaron Harris, Christy Nyland, Dave and Marsha Lee) even finished the walk.  Friday night we all went to the Dillon’s Beach Café for a casual dinner and enjoyed the camaraderie.  We had another fire and enjoyed the company with great “around the fire” stories.

Saturday some of the campers explored the area and others stayed at camp.  In the afternoon was the Dillon’s Beach Olympics, which consisted of “ball toss”, bocce ball and horseshoes.  Arlys & Chuck Rogers were the winners.  They even beat the youngsters, Ed and Joan Fernandez’s daughter and her friend.  Even those campers who arrived late didn’t get off the hook from participating in the Olympics.  The Leard’s arrived in time for dinner along with Jennifer’s brother and his wife.  Dinner was our traditional community spaghetti dinner.  Again, we had a great fire with great friends.

We awoke Sunday morning for our potluck breakfast and “meeting”.  Then it was time for us to pack up and return home.  Dick LaVergne even had little Davey on his car’s antenna.  The Leard’s and family stayed until Tuesday.

Needless to say, it was another great weekend with a great club and wonderful members.  Hope to see all of you soon.

God Bless the country, this club and all of you!

September Camp Out at Coloma State Park

Wagon Masters, Carmen and Aaron Harris

We experienced an incredibly glorious weather window while at our camp out this month.  The temperature in the middle of the day mostly stayed in the 80’s. There is something very magical about camping on a river.

The Couser’s and Harris’s arrived on Wednesday afternoon and set up camp.  It’s wonderful to arrive mid-week at the campgrounds as they are nearly empty and that was the case at Coloma.  It was just us, the trees and the wonderful river rushing by.

The American River flow is adjusted twice a day at this time of the year in order to facilitate whitewater for the rafters and kayakers.  As we woke up early in the mornings, the river flow is very low and the boulders are visible in the riverbed and the little beach/cove area created behind some of the RV’s is very still and half empty.  As the morning passes, the water flow is increased and the river becomes a fast gush forming many rapids.  Up at the top of the campground there are some very fierce rapids that we went up to see when the water was high.  It is great entertainment to watch as the rafters and kayakers maneuver their crafts through the “S” curved rapids among the huge boulders in the river.  It is also the area that the rafting companies have photographers perched to take pictures.

Thursday during the day was spent greeting the new arrivals and socializing.  We gathered at 4:00 pm for appetizers and still more socializing - we just can’t get enough!  For lunch, Jane, Virginia, Richard, Carmen and Aaron went to Sierra Nevada House to “test” out the quality of the cuisine as we were scheduled to eat our dinner there that evening and Carmen was a little apprehensive.  We were very pleased.

After dinner on Thursday, we gathered at the Poynter’s RV patio for an outstanding presentation of their trip to Alaska.  We should have all gone!!  It just sounded great!

Friday afternoon, a contingent of firemen arrived and set up camp near our area.  They were there for the weekend to participate in a swift-water rescue school. They basically became part of our entertainment and several of us walked up to the bridge to watch them get in the water with their rafts and practice their maneuvers.   On Friday evening we went to dinner at the Sierra Nevada House and everyone (even Jack) raved about the food and service.  It is also a very pretty and well-maintained historical landmark.

Saturday night dinner was an appetizer dinner hosted by the Wagon Masters, Carmen and Aaron. Everyone brought great appetizers that were enjoyed by all.  Dick LaVergne joined us for dinner after which our regular monthly meeting was held.

After dinner, the evening became very serious as most everyone started counting their quarters and setting up for some real serious games of  “31”.  There were lots and lots of laughter and giggles during the evening of card playing.   The big winner was Howard Hitt.  Those of us that don’t play cards, sat around and enjoyed a great fire.

Sunday morning we gathered for a delicious brunch and saying our farewells.  It was mostly a weekend of relaxation and lots of socializing.

Thank you for all those that helped us to host this weekend and a special thank you for the great food you brought.

Tech Tip

Ever notice those neat side trays in the newer rigs?  Wish you had one?  Well, here is the poor man’s way.

I used an under bed storage unit. You know, one of these long containers that have wheels on them.  I

found one at Big Lots for $10 that just fit perfectly into one of my front storage compartments.  I discarded

the lid, and added a drop down leg to hold it up when it’s pulled out.  It really helps getting to those items

that are way in the back of the compartment.  They come in various sizes so measure your compartment

and go shopping.  For the leg I used a small hinge and a piece of discarded Molding.
